(How to Read Numbers (2

How to Read Numbers (2)

:From

http://www.themathpage.com

The counting-numbers have two forms:  cardinal and ordinal.

 1.  What are the names of the cardinal numbers?

One, two, three, four, and so on.

A cardinal number answer the question How many?

 2.  What are the names of the ordinal numbers?

First, second, third, fourth, and so on.

An ordinal number answer the question Which one?

We will now see that the ordinal numbers express division into equal parts.  An ordinal number names which part -- the third part, the fourth, the fifth, and so on.

Division into equal parts

If we divide 15, for example, into three equal parts, then we say that 5 is the third part of 15.  We say that because 15 is the third multiple of 5:
5, 10, 15.  We use that same ordinal number to name the part.

If we divide a quantity into four equal parts, then we call each part afourth; if into five equal parts, a fifth; if into one hundred equal parts, ahundredth; but if into two equal parts, we say half.

And so with the exception of half, an ordinal number indicates intohow many parts a quantity has been divided.

A third, a fourth, a fifth, and so on, are the names of parts. They are not yet the names of numbers we call fractions, which, we are about to see, are numbers we need for measuring, and are the parts of number 1.

We will go into this more in Lesson 15.

The decimal system

Since our numbering system is based on the powers of 10, it is called adecimal system. Decem in Latin means ten.  In the previous Lessons we learned about whole numbers, which are the repeated additions of 1:
1, 2, 3, 4, and so on.  Here we will learn about numbers that are less than 1 and that we need for measuring.  They are the numbers we create when we divide 1 into equal parts -- where 1 is now a continuous unit.  And since this is a decimal system, those parts of 1 will have the ordinal names of the powers of 10:  tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.

First , we will divide One into ten equal parts, and so each part is called a Tenth.

If we divide each Tenth into ten equal parts, then One will be in one hundred equal parts -- count them  And so we have divided One intoHundredths.  If we divide each Hundredth into ten equal parts, then each tiny piece will be a Thousandth part of One.  And so on.

Those Tenths, Hundredths, Thousandths are called the decimal units.

 3.  Which numbers are the decimal units?

They are the units less than 1 -- they are the parts of 1 -- named as tenthshundredthsthousandths,ten-thousandths, and so on.

The sequence of names of the decimal units follows the same sequence as the powers of 10.  They are those powers in their ordinal form.

Whole unitsDecimal units
tententh
hundredhundredth
thousandthousandth
ten-thousandten-thousandth
hundred-thousand     hundred-thousandth
millionmillionth

 4.  How do we write a decimal with digits?

First, write the whole number digits (412). Then place a decimal point, whose function is to separate the whole number on the left from the decimal digitson the right. Then continue with the number of tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.

 412.387056

The decimal point signifies "and," in the sense of  "plus."

That is the whole number 412 plus 3 tenths of 1, plus 8 hundredths of 1, plus 7 thousandths; and so on.

Any number written with a decimal point is loosely called a decimal. A number less than 1 -- a proper fraction -- written as a decimal, we call a decimal fraction. A number written with a numerator and denominator we call a common fraction (Lesson 20).

The positions to the right of the decimal point are called the decimal

412.387056

places; the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd, and so on.  Each decimal digit occupies a decimal place.

 5.  Which decimal unit is at each decimal place?

The digit at the 1st decimal place shows the number of Tenths.  In the number above, there are 3 tenths.

The 2nd decimal place shows the number of Hundredths.  In that number, there are 8 hundredths.  And so on.

The first digit to the left of the decimal point -- the 2 -- shows the number of Ones.

As with whole numbers, each digit has its place value:

2.3875. . .

Onestenthshundredthsthousandthsten-thousandths, . . .

As with the whole numbers, each place is ten times the place to its right.

One is ten tenths.

One-tenth is ten hundredths.

One-hundredth is ten thousandths.

One-thousandth is ten ten-thousandths.

And so on.

Example 1.  In this number

534.267

a)  there are how many ones?

Answer.   4.  The ones place is the first digit to the left of the decimal point.

b)  How many hundredths?

Answer.   6.  Hundredths (ordinal) is a decimal unit.  It falls to the right of the decimal point.

c)  How many hundreds?

Answer.   5.  Hundred (cardinal) is a whole unit.  It falls to the left of the decimal point.

Example 2.  Expanded form.   Just as the numeral for every whole number stands for a sum (Lesson 2), so does the numeral for every decimal. Here is the expanded form of

534.267.

534.267 = 5 Hundreds + 3 Tens + 4 Ones + 2 Tenths + 6 Hundredths +

7 Thousandths.

 6.  How do we name or read a decimal?

.038

Ignore the decimal point and read the number as a whole number; then say the decimal unit where the last digit falls.

Example 1.

   .038
    "38 thousandths"

Ignore the decimal point and read 038 as the whole number "Thirty-eight."  The last digit, 8, falls in the thousandths place.

When we read .038 as "Point 0, 3, 8," that is "spelling" the number, which is often convenient. But its name is "Thirty-eight thousandths."

Example 2.

   .002135

    "2,135 millionths"

Ignore the decimal point, and read  002135  as the whole number 2,135 ("Two thousand one hundred thirty-five"  Lesson 2, Question 4). The last digit 5 is in the millionths place.

Example 3.

   14.0029

    "14 and 29 ten-thousandths."

This is called a mixed number.  The decimal point separates the whole number 14 on the left, from the decimal fraction on the right.  In a mixed number, we read the decimal point as "and."

Example 4.    Write these in numerals:

a)  Two hundred four thousand

b)  Two hundred four thousandths

c)  Two hundred and four thousandths

Answers.

a)  204,000This is a purely whole number.
b)  .204This is a purely decimal number.  The thousandths are the 3rd decimal place.  Therefore the 4 must fall in that last place.
c)  200.004This is a mixed number.  The word "and" will always signify the decimal point.

Example 5.    Write in words:  $607.08

Answer.   Six hundred seven dollars and eight cents.

Save "and" for the decimal point.

Note that cents means hundredths.  (Centum in Latin means 100.)  1 cent is the hundredth part of one dollar.  We write 1 cent either as

$.01  or  1¢.

When we write the cent sign ¢, we do not write a decimal point.

Example 6.   Write "eighty cents" using the dollar sign $ and using the cent sign ¢.

Answer.   $.80  80¢

In the Prologue, Elementary Addition, we introduced the number 0. We continue with the following question:

 7.  In our system of numbering, what is the function of 0?

0 signifies that the unit at that place is absent.
0 holds the place.

This number

2001

is obviously very different from this number:

21.

The expanded form of 2001 is

2 Thousands + 0 Hundreds + 0 Tens + 1 One.

The expanded form of 21 is

2 Tens + 1 One.

 8.  Why do 0's written on the right of a decimal not change its value?

.2400000 = .24

Those 0's add nothing to the expanded form.

Consider these expanded forms:

.24 = 2 tenths + 4 hundredths

.2400000 = 2 tenths + 4 hundredths + 0 thousandths + 0 ten-thousandths + etc., etc., etc.

The 0's add nothing to the value.

Therefore a whole number, such as 8, could be written as

8.0  or  8.00  or  8.0000000

0's on the extreme right of a decimal do not change its value. Those 0's are called trailing 0's.They are 0's followed by no other digits.

Similarly, 0's on the left of a whole number do not change its value.

65 = 065 = 0000065

Those are called leading 0's.

Example 1.   Rewrite each number and eliminate the unnecessary 0's.

a)  5.6000 = 5.6

b)  08 = 8

c)  .08  This cannot be changed.  8 is in the hundredths place.

d)  204.006  This cannot be changed either. We may not eliminate
d)  204.006  internal 0's. They are neither leading nor trailing.

Comparing decimals

 9.  How do we compare decimals?

Compare them digit by digit, starting with the firstdecimal digit.

Example 2.  Which of these numbers is smallest, and which is largest?

.34   .306  .2986

Answer.  .2986 is the smallest number, and .34 is the largest.  For, consider each digit in turn.

.34   .306   .2986

With respect to the first decimal digit, .2986 has only 2 tenths, while the others have 3. (Question 5.) 2 tenths is less than 3 tenths (and adding hundredths to it will not make it more).  Therefore .2986 is the smallest number.

As for

.34   versus   . 306

again, the first decimal digits are equal.  Therefore we will compare the second digits.  .34 has 4 hundredths, while .306 has 0 hundredths. 4 hundredths are more than 0 hundredths.  Therefore, .34 is the largest number.

Example 3.   Which is the largest number?

.02   .0201   .021

Answer.  .021

.02   .0201   .021

For, the first two decimal digits are equal:  .02.  Therefore we must look at the third digit.  .02 effectively has 0 as the third digit.  The next number .0201 also has 0 as the third digit.  But .021 has 1 as the third digit.  1 is more than 0.  Therefore, .021 is the largest number.
